Year 3 2018 - 2019

Mrs Mellor

Welcome to our Year 3 class page!

Year 3 is an exciting start to Key Stage 2 at Lower Park.

As a team, we aim to make sure that every child is inspired by their time in school through teaching a wealth of topics in different multisensory styles wherever possible.

This term's topic is 'The Remarkable Rainforest'.

We are looking forward to having animal-Intuition in school on February 9th to teach us about the wildlife from the rainforests.

During their time in Year 3 there are some key challenging areas that we work on with the children.

Independence

While we support the children in and out of the classroom, we teach them the skills to both organise their own belongings and take greater responsibility for their learning.

PE/Games kits are packed independently. Homework diaries are written in by the children. Reading books are changed independently, when they have finished their books, and recorded in their homework diaries. Children self edit their work and take part in two way marking, responding to comments in books.

Handwriting

We have a handwriting policy in school that is available by request. Children should be joining their writing using continuous cursive formation.

Tables

Years 3 and 4 are the perfect time to  learn the tables as this provides a basis for more complex calculating as the children progress through the school.

In year 3, the tables that the children should be confident with are the 2, 3, 5, 10, 4 and 8.

We do encourage the children to continue learning the other tables, if appropriate, so that they know all of the multiplication and division facts by the end of Year 4.

There are many ways to rehearse table. Chanting the tables is highly effective but there are songs such as the  'Maths Rocks' collection and many online games to engage children in their learning. If you have any enquiries please see your child's Maths teacher,

Other Information

PE/Games

Did you know we have 2 weekly exercise classes?

One is outdoor Games and the other is PE. Children are required to have a change of clothes in school for these lessons. Activities include a range of hockey, skipping, football to others such as health related Fitness. We encourage and teach the children skills so that they can lead healthy and active lifestyles, in and out of the classroom.

Throughout the Spring term, both these lessons will be taking place outdoors so warm tracksuits and trainers are advisable.  Please ensure all items of clothing are clearly named.

Homework

The children will have homework to complete each week.  Homework is an important extension to our learning in class so please support your child in completing their homework each week.   The children’s homework will focus on a range of spellings, english and maths tasks.   Homework is sent out every Friday (Thursday for spellings) and must be returned to school by the following Thursday (Wednesday for spellings). There will also be a small test each week on the spellings which have been set. The children are also be expected to read each night at home and complete regular times tables practise.  Please ensure your child brings their homework diary/reading book back to school every day to allow them to read in school and have an opportunity to change their books.

We are always happy to answer messages on classdojo if you need to contact us for any reason. If you need to speak directly to a teacher in LKS2, please either message to make an appointment or catch us before school to organise a time that would suit.
