Welcome to Emerald class

Welcome to Year 2’s class page where you can find out about all the exciting things we get up to….

Our termly newsletter has lots of important information for parents and is available for you to download here,  alongside other important information about our learning and any significant events as we move through the year.

This term’s topic is called ‘Tell me a story’ and we will have a strong focus on reading. The children will have the opportunity to listen to, enjoy and discuss a range of beautiful texts, as well as beginning to record some of their own thoughts, ideas and experiences.

This year our Science work will focus on plants and materials. Within the autumn term we will begin to consider how plants change through the seasons. The children will plant a variety of seeds and bulbs and learn to identify and name a range of British trees. Through our Geography work the children will extend their learning from reception to think more in depth about the immediate local area to our school and we will be using our compass skills to follow short routes.  We follow the Love Music Trust’s planning for music and our first unit is perfectly titled, ‘Tell me a Story.’ In this unit, the children will learn to find the pulse and keep a beat and to sing in unison. Your child will continue to have a computing lesson each week.  In the first half term they will focus on storytelling with augmented reality scenes using the app ARMakr. After half term they will be developing their video creating skills using the app Doink Greenscreen. In Art this term, the children will learn about different artists who go out into the world and use objects from nature to create art. They will explore observational drawing and think about how they can use composition to create their own artwork inspired by their own surroundings. In RE, we will be looking at the concept of kindness, drawing on what Jesus taught through stories from the Bible. The children will end the unit by making a kindness poster using their own ideas about how to show kindness in school. In our PSHE sessions we will be focussing on a range of topics including rules, resilience and friendships.  Our History and DT work will start after half term. Your child will have two PE lessons each week and our first two units will be fundamentals, where the children will be thinking about balance and movement, and ball skills

As you can see we have a great first topic for our return to school and we look forward to a wonderful term.

General Reminders

The children have two PE lessons each week - these are on a Monday and Thursday and children need to come to school in their PE kit.

Please ensure all items of clothing brought in to school are clearly named.

We ask that you hear your child read as regularly as possible as well as reading to them. In addition to reading at home we will send home homework tasks. Each week your child will receive a comprehension task, a set of spellings and a maths game through the app, Mathletics. We appreciate your continued support in assisting your child to complete each task.

Here's to a great year!
